The Upsides and Downsides to Living in Small Towns

A community of interest gathers at Stonehenge,...Image via Wikipedia

By Chuck R Stewart

Living in a small community can be the perfect fit for some people, and not work for other people at all. The suburban houses with Richardson fence look quaint and adorable to some and disgusting and robotic to others. Living in such a community, with a big house and a fence in Plano Texas has its pros and cons. It is a great area to raise children. Good schooling, safe areas and lots of playmates are available. The people often spend time together as a community, building lasting friendships. On the other hand, areas like this have a tendency to shelter themselves from the real world. Some people can't handle this factor. It can also send those who have lived there for their entire lives into a culture shock when they leave.

Bringing up families in small, close-knit towns seems beneficial to most parents. Kidscan be raised in a well structured and safe community. Most small communities have good school systems. So children receive a top-notch education with no extra price other than living. Also, most families in the area have children, so there are play-mates galore. Children build lasting friendships with next-door neighbors in small towns. It is a luxury to be so close to their peers while growing up.

Also, moms and dads benefit from the close relation to other families. Often, since they are smaller and nicer, the adults have lots of groups and clubs that they can meet other parents through. Men get together for things like poker, father-son lacrosse leagues, and basketball. Women can start gardening or book clubs, babysitter circles, and exercise groups. Also, things like traveling dinners are popular. A traveling dinner is when a group of couples go to each others houses for different courses of a meal throughout the night. The availability for these types of adult activities creates lasting friendships for the parents in the community.

However, some people dont like small towns because they are not very in-touch with reality. The perfection and good fortune that surround the children often gives them a twisted view of the world. Also, the fact that most people in these areas are wealthy contributes to the childrens misinterpretation of life. Some find this annoying if they have not lived there their entire lives. Also, when kids leave for college and things they often experience a big culture shock. Being thrown into the real world after growing up in the clean, well groomed society they were used to is a big change.

Small towns are both good in bad at the same time. A lot of the people who live in them will testify that it is a perfect place to live, and those who don't live there will tell you differently. They dont fit all personalities. Raising children in small towns can be an ideal situation. Schools are good, there are lots of similar families and it is a safe area. Also, adults find themselves very social and involved in these tighter-knitted communities. Some people feel that small town have a tendency shelter their inhabitants from the real world. Some feel very at home in a small town, where as some feel estranged.

Why Have Permeable Landscaping In Your Wilmington DE Garden

Shredded wood used as mulch. This type of mulc...Image via Wikipedia

By Jim Carpenter

In Wilmington, DE there are numerous companies who now offer landscaping services, but selecting the one to meet your own particular requirements may prove difficult. The first thing you can do is ask friends or family if they have any particular landscaping Wilmington DE contractor that they can recommend that you use.

When looking for a landscape gardening service and your friends or family are unable to recommend, then look for those who do permeable landscaping. This is a great way of ensuring that your garden looks great throughout the year as it helps to ensure that plenty of water and air are able to penetrate the soil. The more air and water that penetrates the soil in which your plants grow the more nutrients they will get.

Generally these kinds of gardens will have lots of trees, plants and rocks as well as other manmade or natural materials in them. It is using such items within the make up of your garden will help the soil beneath to breathe properly once more.

Too often today in order to keep maintenance down to a minimum in the garden people prefer to include impermeable surfaces within it. The items we are talking about are paving slabs, patios and other solid forms that does not allow water and air to penetrate the soil beneath.

Having permeable landscaping in your garden has other benefits as well. One of these being that it actually helps to prevent soil erosion occurring as the plants and mulch through the establishment of good root structure. So the chances of it eroding away when it rains is greatly reduced.

When considering having this type of landscaping done in your garden by a landscaping Wilmington DE contractor you need to spend time with them planning what it is you want. A good landscape gardening contractor will be more than willing to spend time and listen to what you have to say along with making their own suggestions to meet your particular requirements. One thing they may suggest is the planting of several plants together which need quite a lot of water at any one time. Doing this actually means you have to use less water in order to keep the plants looking good and healthy.

Selecting the right trees, shrubs and man made or natural structures can also be of benefit to your home and your health as well. The right ones will help to modify the climate around it and this could drastically affect how much heat the house retains in the winter and how much remains outside during the summer. Certainly the right kind of planting around your home could reduce your winter heating bills by as much as 25%.

Also using a good quality reputable landscaping Wilmington DE contractor could increase the value of your home as well. On average a home that has well planned and executed landscaping the value of it can increase by as much as 7 ? percent. Plus it can also reduce just how long the house stays on the market if you consider selling by between 5 and 6 weeks.

Learn To Boil Eggs The many ways to Boil Eggs

Closeup of the yolk in a hard-boiled egg.Image via Wikipedia

By Bengare Kasba

Before an egg can be boiled, some rules have to be observed and adhered to. These rules include: refrigerated eggs should never be boiled due to the excessively low temperature that would lead to cracking once exposed to hot water. It is always imperative to always use a kitchen timer rather than depend on memory or guess work. Over-boiling eggs is not recommended because the texture may become rubbery while the yolk turns blackish. When eggs are very fresh, the timing should be allowed an additional 30 seconds.

It is recommendable to use saucepans to spoil eggs because this guarantees that they do not roll around hence avoiding cracking. Boiling eggs requires water that is simmering gently rather than that which is boiling quite fast. This is mainly because of the collection of air on an egg pocket located on its wide end during the boiling process. This eventually leads to pressure buildup which causes cracking. To counter this, a pinprick is used on the rounded exterior of the shell to ensure the steam is freed.

Soft-boiling eggs require the availability of a saucepan which should contain adequate simmering water just enough to ensure coverage of the eggs by " inch. Lowering of the eggs into the bubbling water should be quite gently and a tablespoon should be used for this purpose. The timer can henceforth be set and the eggs permitted to simmer for a minute before moving the pan and changing the setting of the timer. When set for six minutes a soft yolk and a wobbly white is produced, while seven minutes produces a white that is entirely set and a firmer yolk.

It is a tricky and sensitive process to peel hard-boiled eggs and this is particularly crucial when the eggs are rather fresh. For eggs to be boiled in this fashion, the minimum period required before they are packed is five days. The saucepan for holding the boiling eggs should be adequate enough to hold water that covers the eggs by " inch.

Once the water is successfully simmering, the timer should be reset to seven or six minutes and this is largely dependent on how much the user wants them cooked. Cold running water is preferably used to quickly cool the eggs and this generally takes a minute. Two minutes in the cold water is adequate to cool ideally.

How You Can Afford A Home Improvement When You Have No Equity

Home Improvements album coverImage via Wikipedia

by J Miller

The housing bubble has burst and because of the crash in home values across the nation there are a lot of people who are now living in homes that have not built up any added value over the past several years. This has put stress on people who were hoping to use the increased financial value of their homes to perform some much needed home improvements.

In a rising housing market you can buy a house value one year and in the next year the value of the home will actually grow by a few percentage points from one year to the next. So if you bought a home for $180,000 five years ago it might actually be worth $190,000 today with normal economic growth. You would then be able to borrow money against that added value from a lending institution and use that cash to upgrade your home.

Today many people don't have that added home value which is known as "equity." Most housing prices have actually dropped in the past year or so, which means a lot of people are now living in houses that are now worth less than what they originally paid. When you owe more cash on a house than what it is worth then you are said to be "underwater" with your mortgage payments.

If you're searching for a big home improvement loan then you may want to think about applying for an FHA home improvement loan from an eligible loan partner. There are lots of sellers of these kinds of loans, they offer a competitive interest rate and you may be eligible to pay it off over a generous 15 years. Just about any one who owns a home can apply for an FHA loan and eligibility is less severe than most traditional bank loans. You do not have to have equity in your home to apply for an FHA Title I home improvement loan.

Another good way to keep the high price of a home upgrade project down is to do at least some of the labor yourself. There are lots of easy DIY home improvement jobs most people can do around their houses with just a little bit of knowledge and some elbow grease. For many home improvement projects the highest expense often comes from the amount of manual work involved, so by doing some of that work yourself, you can really shrink the total cost of the overall project.

Most manageable house repairs can become large headaches if they are allowed to go unaddressed for too long. If you have a important home repair that needs to be done, don't let a lack of equity prevent you from obtaining the cash you need to make the improvements. And, as expected, large home improvements always end up costing more than the little ones.

Ask The Right Questions To Save With Coupons

Piggly Wiggly was the first self-service groce...Image via Wikipedia

by Catherine Campbell

If you are like many of us these days you are concerned with saving money. Learning how to shop for sales, using coupons and taking advantage of all of the savings that are probable is certainly worth your time in these uncertain financial times.

Most everybody shops for foodstuff and groceries plus cleaning items like laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid and personal items like shampoo and soap. Coupons for these types of items are as a rule quite abundant and easy to find so capitalizing on the savings from coupons is a intelligent move.

There are often rules that go along with using coupons but rules are made to be broken. Ask the boss of the store what he will do or won't do. If you don't ask the question you'll never know but if you do ask the question you may get a pleasant surprise. Here are a few constructive questions you can ask.

See if the store offers its own coupons. Many stores do. You can continually check the website online but some stores may not have a website so just make sure that you inquire. If they have them they will gladly give some to you and if they don't then maybe you just gave them an plan that can bring in more business.

Ask if the store will allow you to use a coupon on a sales price or clearance item. Many times they will spell it right out on the coupon that it is not allowed but you can always ask. The worst they can do is say, "no" and they may end up saying "yes". If by chance they do you will save quite a bit more money.

See if the store will accept competitor's coupons. Most stores offer some type of a price promise that offers you the lower price if you see the item advertised at a lower price but many folks don't even ask about competitors coupons. It's in their best interest to say "yes" to this demand so ask the question.

Ask if the store will allow you to join coupons or use multiple coupons. When you combine manufacturers coupons with store coupons and sales you end up maximizing your savings. Many times stores will allow you to do this so make sure that you ask. You can also ask if they will accept expired coupons. They might and you'll never know unless you ask.

Saving money for your family is imperative and you need to do all that you can to achieve that. Ask the right questions and see what kind of deals you can work out with the stores. Take advantage of all of the savings that you can.

How to Set Up Family Budget

budget_cutImage by digital_monkey via Flickr

by Anuradha

In order to control the spending of the family, one must set up budget. It ensures that your hard earned money is not wasted. It allows you save enough money which can be used on more important things such as your childs education or for retirement.

Basically, a family budget is tool which is used to control the expenditure of family. It allows you to control expenses in such a way that you have enough money to pay all your bills and still saves some money that can be set aside for future use.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to set up an effective household budget.

1- Gather your expenditure bills to start your budget. Make sure to gather each and every bill no matter it is big or small. Include even your newspaper bill and do not assume any expense is too small to record.

2- After gathering bills, you need to choose budget format. You can either yourself make a budget format in excel or you can download pre-build format from various websites on Internet. Whichever budget format you use, make sure that it is easy to understand and should be as clear as possible.

3- After selecting budget format, you need to calculate your total monthly expenses. It was easy for you as you have already gathered all of your bills. Total the amount of each and every bill of your expenses and you will have the total figure of your monthly expenses which you can note down in Expenses column of your budget format.

4- Once you have figured out the total monthly expenses, now its time to calculate total monthly Income. This can be done by gathering all of your pay stubs and Income receipts from all the contributing members of your family. Write this figure in the Income column of budget format.

5- Your budget format is ready now. You have now the figure of total expenses and total income for the month. What you need to do now is to compare your total income with total expenditure. If your expenditures are more than your total income, you need to assess your expenses and look at the options to reduce your unnecessary expenses.

6- On the other hand, if you have more income than your expense, you can put this extra money into your saving account instead of spending it impulsively.

Setting up Family budget can really help you cut down unnecessary expenses. It sets guidelines about where and when to spend money. It helps you achieve your long term financial goals. So every family must set up a Household Budget.

All Cooped Up! How To Build A Chicken Coop

A movable chicken coop with an A-frame design ...Image via Wikipedia

by Sandra Stammberger

Chickens are fun to watch and they can provide you eggs and meat. Often times people buy chickens and let them live outside and to find whatever shelter they can provide for themselves. There are two problems with raising chickens in that manner, the first are the many predators that are hunting your chickens, there are numerous stray dogs that will wipe out a flock of chickens not to mention skunks and other animals. The second problem is that they do not lay eggs well when they are raised that way and when they do lay eggs it is difficult to find them. In this article I am going to give you two different ideas about how to make a chicken coop.

Free Organic Eggs! Building a coop is far easier than many people believe. Chickens are low maintenance pets. Building a chicken Coop Supports Sustainable Living. The chickens provide hours and hours of entertainment. Chickens get along with other pets. Chickens do not smell. Your eggs will not be weeks old before you even buy them at the grocery store. You can get the freshest eggs. You prevent your chicken from dying of a disease in a small cage. You do not have to have a big backyard to enjoy chickens and their eggs. Chickens are loyal pets. Eggs may prevent breast cancer. In one study, women who consumed at least 6 eggs per week lowered their of breast cancer by 44%. Chickens are very clean animals. IT IS FUN!

Often times when we ask how to make a chicken coop or anything else for that matter we try to rack our heads to come up with ideas for the perfect plan. If you are good at this type of planning thats great or if you are just a weekend project type of person then you might like my second idea. Rather than pull your hair out coming up with elaborate plans for making your chicken coop, you can go to your local hardware store and buy a set of plans for a small or large wood shed for about $5.00 and even less. The size of the shed depends on how many chickens that you have. It is important to remember that you will have to build a roost and laying boxes if you decide too go this rout. A roost can simply be made out of two 2x4x8s and three or four 2x2x8s. Nail your 2x4s about 7 feet apart at about a 45 degree angle, space the 2x2s crossways and now you have a roost. Your egg boxes can be made our of ply wood and 2x2s, make sure to put dividers in them due to the fact that chickens like a certain amount of privacy when they lay eggs.

No matter which idea you pick make sure that you build a chicken yard off of the coop. it is also a good idea to put chicken wire over the top of the chicken yard or run due to flying predators like hawks and crows.

Once you have your foundations set up, put the flooring in, again, about four feet from the ground. You can corner nail the flooring in if you wish, but it is a better idea to place small 2x4 braces under the flooring where they will connect to the foundations. This will give a little extra support and a good spot to put your nails in.

On a final note, be sure and put a decent amount of hay inside each doorway so that the chickens can use it for nesting. Enjoy your farm fresh eggs, fresh chicken meat, and the cash you make from selling those eggs!

Now, simply measure between the walls and floor for height and from foundation to foundation for the back and side walls. Use good thick plywood for this, at least inch. Do the exact same for the front wall, but cut out several doorways from the plywood so that the chickens can enter and exit. With that, the coop itself is almost finished. Now all you need to do is take some 1x5 boards and run them into the doorways angled to the ground so your chickens can enter and exit easily. A quick wire mesh fence around it all later and you have your completed chicken coop. At the very most, you might have $40.00 invested. Many people even use second-hand lumber to save even more cash.

Be aure to put hay inside the doorways. This is to make sure that your chicken can use it for nesting. And in some days it is time to enjoy your fresh farm eggs... you can even sell your eggs and make some additional money!

Caring for Your Indoor Bonsai

Bonsai PlantImage by shotfinder via Flickr

by Kim Archer

Bonsai plants are the stunning result of an ancient practice. Because of their attractive appearance, lots of people like to have a bonsai plant in their homes. However, extra care is needed for indoor bonsai trees. This is largely due to the fact that they don't get the full range of benefits that sunlight and normal weather conditions provide. Perhaps they look like they can withstand anything. But certain types of bonsai are quite picky in their water and light requirements.

Watering Your Indoor Bonsai

When you bring a bonsai tree indoors it will require lighting to replace the natural sunlight that it would have been receiving beforehand. You will also need to monitor how often it is watered. Well ventilated surroundings will also keep your bonsai plant at its best. The variety of bonsai plant that you possess will dictate how how often it requires watering. Soil is another important consideration. Some bonsai plants or trees require damp soil, whilst others survive well in a drought. It may be necessary for you to mist your plant. This creates a humid environment similar to a rainforest, which your bonsai will love. If using a humidity tray, be sure to place the pot on some small rocks or a stand so it isn't directly immersed in the water.

Bonsai Cutting and Pruning

Indoor bonsai trees still require pruning and cutting on a regular basis in order to maintain their appearance. Just because bonsais look ageless and timeless, this doesn't mean they don't keep growing. It is important to repot indoor and outdoor bonsai plants anywhere from once yearly to every three years depending upon what kind of plant or tree it is. It is also important to maintain the branches to keep its style intact. Depending on the type of bonsai, it's important to reduce the amount of fertilizer you use during the winter. This is due to the fact that there are certain species of bonsai that hibernate during the season. So they don't require as many nutrients as in the warmer months. Indoor bonsais may not fully experience the full cycle of seasons because it is in an artificial environment. It is also important to check indoor bonsai trees for pests and other anomalies. An indoor bonsai is very attractive to mites, spiders and other pests. Carefully cleaning the branches and leaves with a soft brush or moistened cloth is the best approach.

By following these tips for bonsai care, your tree is sure to be an attractive feature of your home for years to come.

Potty Training Problems

Oscar and his new potty chairImage by carpediem37 via Flickr

by Paul Jason James

Potty training is new territory for your toddler. Up until now, they have been happy-go-lucky, learning about her new world at there own pace and making all kinds of exciting discoveries. They have learned how to form sounds into words that communicate what they want, she's learned how to put her legs under her and walk and all this was done at her own pace. They probably thinks she invented walking and talking. Now all of a sudden, someone has decided she will no longer relieve herself in her diaper and plops her down on a potty and tells her to "go".

This is fertile ground for potty training problems. Prevention is the Best Cure Look at potty training from the child's perspective. What kind of introduction has she had to the toilet and the bathroom in general. Has this room been off-limits before now? Let her follow you into the bathroom before you start potty training her. Answer the questions that occur.

Let her flush the toilet and sit on it with the lid closed first. Believe it or not, many children are afraid of the toilet. They see things go down and not come back and wonder if that can happen to them.

When they are comfortable being around the toilet, let her sit on the seat. If they feels afraid, buy her a potty seat that snaps on securely or a potty chair. Humans are born with the fear of falling and sitting on a toilet seat with nothing under her can make your child feel like she's going to fall.

Regression, is when a child begins to learn potty training, then suddenly seems to lose ground. Children who were perfectly happy to go along with the potty training routine all of a sudden begin having accidents frequently. Regression isn't always a problem.

There may be an external factor such as a change in the environment that's causing the regression or it may just be that they want to slow down a little. Most experts agree that periods of regression are normal during potty training and, unless there is a medical condition such as a urinary tract infection, they do not need intervention. Simply continue to gently encourage her with her potty training and they will get back on track.

Most potty training problems can be identified by looking at them through your child's eyes. Inconsistencies, fears, punishment for accidents and regression can all trigger potty training problems.
