Lyme disease in dogs

SPOILED-ROTTEN-TO-THE-CORE dogImage by ucumari via Flickr

Lyme disease is named after the Connecticut town of Lyme where the disease was first discovered. One of the more common dog diseases, it has been seen in dogs in every part of the United States although it is more common in certain geographical areas, including California, New England and parts of the American South.

It is caused by cork-screw shaped bacteria called spirochetes which are transmitted through bites from ticks that have attached themselves to your dog's skin. The ticks, in turn, catch the bacteria from certain varieties of white mice.

An infected tick must remain stuck to your dog's skin for at least two days in order for the disease to take hold in your pet. Unfortunately, these ticks are very small and often difficult to detect

There are actually three different kinds of ticks that are carriers of Lyme disease, although the majority of cases are transmitted by the deer tick. Symptoms include limping, a higher than normal fever and swollen lymph nodes. A dog with Lyme disease may suffer only mild discomfort at first. But over a period of several days, it may be suffer intense pains in the joints that it will refuse to move.

One problem with diagnosing Lyme disease is that its symptoms closely resemble other diseases involving the dog's lymph tissue and its immune system. At the same time, dogs are sometimes mistakenly diagnosed with Lyme disease when the disorder is actually something else entirely.

However, time is of the essence if you suspect that your canine may be suffering from Lyme disease. If caught and treated early, your pet won't suffer any permanent damage. Left untreated for too long, the disorder can damage your dog's heart and muscle tissue and cause joint and nerve damage.

If you see symptoms that indicate Lyme disease in your previously healthy dog, go to your local pet hospital as quickly as possible for a diagnosis. The vet will give your dog a simple blood test to see if Lyme bacteria are present or not.

Unfortunately, the blood test by itself does not always give a definite answer and the veterinarian will also take into consideration your dog's health history and other symptoms. Treatment is usually with antibiotics which your dog must take for three to four weeks.

If your dog or cat suffers from arthritis pain, don't make it suffer any longer. Relieve joint pain, lubricate the joints, increase flexibility and improve mobility with the best puppy pain relief

Cheap Hotel Rates and How to Get Them

Facade of The Pierre, New YorkImage via Wikipedia

by Chris Linch

With the cost of everything going up, a cheap hotel may be what you are looking for when you go on your next business trip or vacation. But, when you think of a "cheap hotel" you may not have pleasant images in your mind-uncomfortable beds, no amenities and just the basic necessities. But, if you could find a really great hotel with amenities and extras at a cheap hotel rate, you would probably jump at the chance to take it. Where can you find these great rates? You probably have heard about online specials, but you should also consider calling the hotel directly as well as looking for package deals, and special discounts for a cheap hotel rate.

Why should you call the hotel directly? If you are planning on staying at a chain hotel, you don't want to talk to the main reservation number-try calling the hotel directly. They may be able to give you a cheap hotel deal that is not advertised to the general public. You can also ask about any specials or package deals that they have. Let them know what kinds of rates you are finding online and see if they will match or beat them.

Nearly everyone knows about using the internet to get a cheap hotel rate. You may bid for a cheap rate or you may just search around and compare until you find the best one. An advantage of shopping this way is that it is very convenient and you can look at lots of rates in a very short time. Try different travel dates to see if you can get a lower rate that way if possible.

Another way to get a cheap hotel rate is to get a package deal. If you go on an all-inclusive travel website, many times you are able to make your hotel, air and rental car reservations at the same time. You can potentially save hundreds of dollars this way. If you are really flexible in your travel and you don't care when or where you go, you may also be able to save by traveling in off-peak times. For instance, if you stay at a Colorado ski resort in the summer or at a California amusement park during the middle of the school year you may get better rates.

Check for military discounts, credit card discounts and other discounts that you may have. Stay cheap and live well.

Tips for Summer Festivals 2

Make sure also to have your kids wear socks and shoes instead of slippers and sandals. Mud can also contain several colonies of spores or protozoans that could slip into your skin and cause infections and even diseases (take note that ticks could very well stick and burrow in the callouses of your skin, transmitting diseases such as Lyme.)

Schedule your trip in a strict manner, following curfews and avoiding getting lost and/or separating from the group. 12 am means 12 am, everyone should be at the car by then. Mosquitoes and other insects are very active during the time between dusk till dawn. Although you might be safe from the sun, its the insects that you need protecting from. Also, try and cut down from scented soaps and oils, or particularly anything that can enhance how you smell. Bugs and mosquitoes would surely home in on you.

If you have a baby in a stroller, don't forget to replete the usual accoutrement. Put a bug screen over the baby's stroller so the mosquitoes don't get in and irritate baby's delicate skin. Or worse, transmit an infectious disease that could put her health in jeopardy.

Take note that with insect repellents, it is not recommended to reapply it every now or so often, just because you don't feel that it works. Repellents have a certain compound called DEET, which is quite not safe in large amounts. DEET is available in some repellents, and is there to make sure that the repellent lasts long and stays long especially in outside environments.

Long sleeves also help by not only keeping the mosquitoes away, it also regulates some of the heat of your body (keeping it inside if you're going out in a cold night, or keeping the sun away when you're going out in day time).

California Climate Registry Committed to Climate Change

California Climate Action RegistryImage via Wikipedia

by Daniel Stouffer

Formerly known as the California Climate Action Registry (or California Climate Registry), The Climate Action Reserve is committed to solving the problems of climate change by enhancing reporting requirements. As the reserve is now the parent organization, the Registry becomes a program under its supervision.

The California Climate Registry had just over 20 members when it was originally formed, but this number increased to more than 300. Now, chief executives and officials of major corporations, government agencies, universities, counties and cities are actively involved in these environmental issues. All these organizations oversee, measure and report the greenhouse gas activities on a voluntary basis. Collectively, they are working towards a solution to our climate change problem.

The state of California recognizes the pro-active participation of the members of the California Climate Registry, as they strive to verify and publicly report their greenhouse gas emission levels. The state will consider this involvement when future state, federal or global GHG regulations are implemented.

The California Climate Registry was formed following a lobby from a group of chief executive officers. Following the lobby, a bill was introduced to the California state legislature, prompting Gov. Gray Davis to sign a bill into law on October 13, 2001 forming the registry.

As climate change is, of course, beyond state borders, the California Climate Registry has relinquished its duties to the Climate Registry. In this way, all emissions reporting will now be the responsibility of the climate Registry, but the California organization will continue to operate as a program, under the auspices of the Climate Action Reserve, representing the members in the host state.

The California Climate Registry is an integral program under the umbrella of the Climate Action Reserve. The Reserve's stated goal is to work to ensure environmental benefits, integrity and progressive movement in greenhouse gas emissions, reductions and policies.

Members of the California Action Registry are actively involved in discovering and introducing market-based solutions for the greenhouse gas problem. The members are also involved in constructing relevant regulations in this ongoing initiative.

Organizations that are involved in the production of greenhouse gases, recognize that emissions reporting is an increasingly important consideration. As regulation forces these companies to consider their reporting methods, many are turning to software driven applications and programs to help them gather and report the relevant data.
