Simple Automotive Maintenance Advice That Can Save Time And Money

Renault 14Image via Wikipedia

By Ross Everett

Since I was a small child, I have had the importance of automotive maintenance drilled into my head. Now that I've reached adulthood, I appreciate the sound foundation I had in this discipline of critical importance. I cant imagine the time and money Ive saved and headaches Ive avoided. If you didnt have this background, and dont have a clue about how to maintain your car, dont despair. There are a number of simple car maintenance tasks that anyone can do even if you know nothing about how a car works.

--A clean car is a happy car: The outside of your car isnt as important as whats under the hood, but it is still important. In addition to the aesthetic benefits of a clean car theres a number of practical matters it addresses. Keeping your windshield clean inside and out is crucial for safety. Keeping the rest of the car clean prevents rust and corrosion.. And when youre cleaning your car, dont forget.

--Clean the undercarriage of the car: This is especially true if you live anywhere it snows"all of the salt and other gunk your car gets underneath it will rust out your body faster than anything. I dont care how cold it is, you should give your car a good bath at least once a week during the winter, and make sure to get underneath the wheel wells and the undercarriage of your car.

--Clean your engine: Wash your engine, complete with soap and water, every time you wash your car. Not only will a clean engine run cooler, but washing it also cleans off crusty oil deposits, battery acid, and grime collected from the road. Let your engine run at idle to dry off before you start driving again. This is less of a problem with modern fuel injected cars, but still a good idea.

--Change and/or clean your air filter: Change your filter every time you change your oil filter. While it won't kill you to change your filter less frequently, they're so cheap and easy to replace there's really no reason to put it off. In between changes, give the filter a good spray with a compressed air hose and blow out the filter chamber as well.

--Check and change your oil: Back in more civilized times, a full service gas station would check your oil every time you filled up. You should do the same. Change your oil frequently"at least every 5,000 miles and better still, every 3,000 miles. Change your filter when you change the oil or youre going to be pumping clean oil through a dirty filter which doesnt do you a bit of good. Oil changes are a pretty easy job even for those without much of a mechanical background, and drive thru oil change businesses are ubiquitous in any decent sized market. Most of these places do a decent job and charge a reasonable fee. Many also take care of several other of the maintenance tasks on this list.

--Other fluids: Change your anti-freeze every year, and eyeball the coolant reservoir anytime youre under the hood to make sure that its full. Check the transmission, brake and power-steering fluids frequently, and top off when necessary.

--Take good care of your tires: Check your air pressure levels with a tire gauge at least once a week, keeping them filled to manufacturer specified levels. Check the spare tire--if you have a 'real' tire as a spare make sure it's properly inflated, and even if you have a 'donut' temporary spare make sure it isn't damaged. Rotate your tires every few months or more frequently if you drive a lot of miles. This will insure even wear, and along with proper inflation will prevent countless problems as well as saving you time and money.

Emergency tools and equipment: Despite your best efforts to the contrary, things will eventually go wrong. When in does, youll be glad that you planned ahead. These items should be in your trunk at all times: tire gauge, pliers (slip-joint and needle nose), adjustable wrench, flat head and Phillips screwdriver. Dont buy cheap tools"theyll break and the least opportune times. Invest in Craftsman tools or another premium brand, and youll be set for life. Youll also need a flashlight, and if you live somewhere it snows its also a good idea to have salt, sand, a small shovel, and a blanket just in case you get snowbound and have to sleep in your car. A cellphone charger is also a good thing to have, since a cellphone doesn't do much good if your batteries are dead. There are also 'emergency' cellphone chargers that don't require a power source.

--Get an auto club membership: An auto club at a minimum should give you free towing, trip continuation insurance, lockout service, free maps, and some other bells and whistles. AAA is the best known, but there are countless others provided by credit card companies, cellphone providers, banks, etc. Shop around and find the best deal for the services you need. A growing number of car manufacturers also include lifetime roadside assistance, and not just luxury brands--Mini Cooper and Volkswagen offer new car buyers 24 hour roadside assistance free of charge. Also, ask about the size of their provider network. In a decent sized city you'll be fine but if you live or frequently travel in less populated areas you might want to stick to AAA or another major company. There's nothing more infuriating that learning that your auto club doesn't have providers in Mesquite, Nevada or Vernal, Utah.

None of these tips require any significant mechanical competence or even more than a basic knowledge of how the car works. Still, they can help save time and money, extend the life of your vehicle and provide a safer driving experience.

Buy Auto Insurance Online - How To Find Auto Insurance Quotes Online

How to Get Cheap Automobile Insurance Rate Quotes

By Matt Hellstrom

If you are shopping around for auto insurance, whether it's your first time, or it's because you're getting a new car, or it's just because you think you can get a better rate, getting auto insurance quotes online is the only way to shop. In possibly no other common transaction is the value of the Internet more pronounced. Customer loyalty has been shattered in the car insurance business, thanks to transparency of the World Wide Web.

As a group, insurance companies, brokers and agents combined to form a distinct group of what the marketing whizzes call "early adopters." Now, a sub-group called skimmers has formed with Grey Power and the American Association of Retired Persons in the lead. These groups negotiate bulk rates for group members and in so doing skim off the cream of the car insurance crop. With the ease of obtaining auto insurance quotes online, competition for business is fierce.

The insurance companies have to balance off the income they lose in giving group rates to older drivers. That's the way business works. And in this case, business working means rates for high-risk young males and new drivers have soared in part thanks to the Internet. It is no longer uncommon for young drivers to drive without collision coverage even in an almost new car, or to drive with no insurance at all. It is one of those unintended consequence of new technologies.

The benefits for consumers in shopping online for automobile insurance are tremendous. Calling insurance agents and brokers is time consuming, plus you have to reveal personal information to strangers, which is never fun, even if you're not privacy sensitive. And when was the last time you called a business office and didn't have to go through a time consuming voice menu only to wind up talking to an answering machine?

A recent survey by a well known business school asked 400 online insurance shoppers why they chose to look for car insurance online. The number one response was that they wanted a quote and that was it. Car insurance websites know this and make it as fast and easy to use as possible.

For many, playing with the answers to the yes - no question you have to answer to get the quote is an eye opener. In these tight economic times, being able to see how your insurance rate will change if you buy the Honda Accord as compared to if you go for the Echo, may well be the differentiator in more than one buyer's mind.

Perhaps one of the most attractive and informative features of otaining an auto insurance quote online besides shopping for car insurance is when you decide to shop for a new car. Many sites that offer online auto insurance quotes have a feature where people can find out the different rates per vehicle. When evaluating comparable models that vary greatly in dealer invoice prices, the car insurance cost can be a deal breaker or maker.

Auto Sales Training Tips and Strategies

by Mak

The process of investigating may seem like a tedious one, but it is a necessary one. You will use the information you learn through investigating to make your presentation easier and build confidence. It can be key to closing a sale. Learn good investigating skills like watching, listening and questioning and learn how to appropriately use the information to increase your sales.

Car Sales Training Tip One: Proper Study Skills Getting to know your customer is the key to a good investigation. As salespeople, we are lucky because we have the gift of gab. Spend some time just chatting with your customer. Don't focus on the car or the bottom line; instead just get to know them. Ask about their kids or their favorite professional sports team. See if you share any interests in common. A word of caution, it is very easy to step on toes so avoid topics like politics or religion. These topics are very likely to cause problems in the conversation so it is best to avoid them all together. The time you spend getting to know your customer will make investigating their needs and wants much easier.

Car Sales Training Tip Two: What's the Point? Investigation does serve a purpose, and an important one at that. Throughout your investigation, you will gather information that you can use when you make your presentation. Furthermore, your customer will feel more comfortable with you and be more likely to have faith and confidence in what you are selling them. Finally, because you have good rapport, have made a proper presentation and your customer trusts you, it is much more likely that you will close the sale.

Car Salesmen Tip Three: How to Conduct a Proper Investigation Actually listen to your customer and make sure you hear what they are saying. A prime mistake made in investigation is assuming you understand what they are saying. Take the time to make sure you hear them correctly. Also, sit back and watch them. Take note of where they pause and why. Use this information to tailor your sale pitch to them. Question your customer to further narrow down their car choice. That is all it takes!

The investigation portion of the sales process may be one of the most tedious, but it is also one of the most important. Learn to put good investigating skills to use to discern what your customer wants and needs. Build rapport to make your presentation easier, build trust and close the deal. Use simple tactic like watching, listening, questioning and keeping on track to make investigating easier. A thorough investigation is key to increasing sales.

2003 Detroit Auto ShowImage by Corvair Owner via Flickr

by Jake Wakefield

High gas prices have become a normal occurrence today. We often have to shell out more and more money to get just as far as we were getting before.

However, there are solutions to this price problem that you can fully utilize in order to save money on gasoline costs. One of these ways is Half Water Half Gas which can help you save over 60% of your fuel costs by utilizing simple water.

This technology was apparently invented over 90 years ago but was never put into widespread use because the oil industry did not like it. This technology has become more available today due to the internet and better spread of information.

This system basically works by increasing gasoline efficiency by running a car on gasoline and water.

It works by using the extra electricity generated by the battery to turn water into oxygen and hydrogen. Then the engine's vacuum system is used to blend the hydrogen and oxygen with gasoline. The gas is burned more fully resulting in not as much gas needed to get you just as far. This means more money for you.

Additionally, in order to install this great technology, it is very simple. Anyone can achieve it, even people who have never done anything with car before. It can all be done using simple tools that are available at any hardware store across the country.

If you are interested in picking up your own guide on installing this wonderful device to save you 60% and more of your fuel costs, then check out the Half Water Half Gas guide which features detailed instructions on how to install such a system and allow you to start saving more money on gasoline today.

Detailing your Car Wheels

A collection of cans of :en:paint and other re...Image via Wikipedia

by Bobbie McKee

In order to effectively detail your car, you have to know the categories first. There is the non-painted wheel and the painted one. Both of these wheel categories have one thing in common and that is have a brake dust. There is no way that dust can be an exemption. Even the most expensive car is not exempted from acquiring as much dust as there is.

Brake dust is something that is responsible for coating the outside portion of your wheel and goes to detracting appearance. Sources of brake dust are the part that is close to it which is the brake pads. When these pads wear off, they become the dust that coats the brake. Fear not, for there is a solution to these pesky brake dusts. Special cleaners meant for wheels are very much available in automobile stores which are designed to extract brake dusts and are to be purchased accommodate non-painted and painted wheels.

Not sure about the paint of your wheels? You can take some polish, it should be the lighter one, then put it on the white towel, rub it on the area of your car's wheel. If you see a black color from your rag, then you have a wheel that is non-painted which means its surface is made of metal. On the other hand, if you have see that your towel has the same color as your wheel, then it must be painted. If you don't see any black but then again the wheel seems to have a metallic surface, there is a possibility that you have a wheel that's clear coated. On encountering clear-coated wheels, you can just treat it the way you would treat painted wheels.

In case you have a wheel that is non-painted, you have to determine the kind of material that was used in order to use the appropriate cleaner. The treatment of the surface can make considerable difference which should not be disregarded. If you're not sure about the requirements of different surfaces, you can consult the manual of factories which supplied your car with its wheels.

It is more advisable that you separate your car's surface washing from cleaning of your wheel. This will lessen or entirely avoid any kind of scratches because the tires and wheels tend to contain large amounts of dirt particles. If you use the same sponge or mitt, you can transfer the particles coming from the wheels to the surface paint of your car which, in turn, may cause scratches.

You have to keep in mind that wheels are the ones that get all the dirt and are considered as one of the dirtiest places of your car therefore, you have to give a more aggressive cleaning attention. If you clean your wheels in a separate manner, you can use a detergent that has a higher concentration which you should not use on the car's actual surface because it will cause wax removal.

You have to make sure that all parts of the car are removed from the area to be able to effectively clean all parts. Washing the parts separately will give you a more efficient car detailing job. Be sure that you don't lose the parts that you have removed to be able to put them back in proper places. And, try to remember the way you removed it in order for you to put it back on properly.

The future of solar energy on transportation

Louis Palmer standing in the Solartaxi.Image via Wikipedia

by Bobbie McKee

Are you familiar with the World Solar Challenge? It is a race specifically for solar cars. Solar cars basically have arrays of photovoltaic cells which converts the sun's rays into usable electrical energy. The purpose of the race is to raise awareness on the use of the sun's energy on transportation and the development of other alternative forms of energy particularly the solar cells.

The future of using solar energy on transportation services may still be a little hazy given the practical difficulties involve in converting ordinary cars into solar cars but the idea is here to stay and hopefully develops into something promising and useful.

At this point, solar cars have been built to join solar car races. Very few have been constructed for practical and commercial purposes. There are several reasons why the solar car remains on the background.

The design of a solar car relies on the electrical system of the vehicle. The system controls the electricity the flows from the photovoltaic cells to the batteries, to the wheels, and to the controls. The electric motor that moves the vehicle is powered purely by the electricity produced by the solar cells. The solar cells, depending on the number installed on the vehicle, can produce more or less 1000 watts of power from the sun's rays. To give you an idea, 1000 watts is just enough electricity to power an electric iron or even a toaster.

And since the sun will most likely be covered by clouds at one time or the other, or the car goes through a tunnel or something, solar cars are equipped with batteries to serve as backup power supply for the motor. The battery packs are charged by the solar cells. However, the batteries are not charge while driving the solar car unless you intend to go very slow.

Just like a gas pedal in conventional motors, a motor controller regulates the amount of electricity that enters the motor to speed up or slow down the vehicle whenever needed. Solar cars are not that slow as perceived by almost everyone. These cars can go to as fast as 80-85 mph.

With this, you can see why solar cars are not yet into commercial production. Nowadays, solar cells can harness more than 21% of the sun's energy that hit the surface. If the time comes that the cells can actually get more energy from the sun then maybe we can see solar cars on the streets. But at this time, it is quite difficult to make a commercial production model of a solar car.

Nevertheless, there are companies who have already created some concept solar cars and are testing how road worthy they are. There's even a scooter that is street legal and runs from batteries charged from photovoltaic cells. Other possible application of solar car technologies is on golf carts which runs pretty slow in the first place and can be appreciated by golfers as well.

The future of solar energy on transportation is still not that clear. The application of solar energy on homes and buildings has been moving forward in recent years so hopefully we can find new ways of converting the sun's energy into usable electricity. And this time something that can be economically and efficiently installed in conventional cars.

Traveling With Pets

My dog dreams of travellingImage by anetz via Flickr

by Cheryl L. True

Going on a trip with your pet? Be prepared. Call before you leave to make sure your hotel accepts pets. There may be restrictions or fees.

Find out where the veterinary clinics are located close to where you are staying.

Vaccinations may be required when traveling abroad. Rabies is one that is required to and from the United States. You should take your pet to your vet prior to the trip. Find out what vaccinations are required and what diseases or problems may exist at your destination.

Plan your mode of transportation in advance. Buses and trains won't allow dogs on board. Airlines have various rules and restrictions so call in advance to avoid problems.

Avoid crowded times of the day and places that may make your pet nervous or skittish.

Even if your pet is naturally docile and calm, it may suddenly bolt for open windows or doors when confronted with new and unusual surroundings, people and smells. Using a leash is often best.

An identification tag is always a god idea, especially when your pet is in unfamiliar territory. You should always keep identification tags on your pet as well as a leash for your dog when it is outside. You may also want to bring along a current photo of your pet for identification purposes in case it gets lost.

Car rides are filled with potential hazards. Avoid leaving your pet unattended in the vehicle. It's easy for your pet to get heatstroke. If you must leave your pet in the vehicle while you are gone, leave at least two windows open for a cross draft and fresh air. A car can heat up to devastating temperatures in a very short amount of time.

Air travel is stressful enough without a pet. Airports are extremely crowded and you have to schedule and plan in advance to avoid various complications.

Instead of bringing your pet with you on your travels, you can always keep your pet at home with someone your pet is familiar or comfortable with who can feed and take care of it twice a day. A boarding kennel or a professional sitter is another option.

Are you losing your pets to accidents? Do they wander and never return? Show them that you care. Keep your pets safe from harm with the petsafe instant fence
