Build A Stronger Team

17th century painting from Hasht-Bahesht palac...Image via Wikipedia

By Lynn Lopez

One of the qualities practically all companies and employers are looking for in their employees is "the ability to be a team player." Truth be told, not all of us are built to be team players, but we work at it in order to be more effective at our jobs. Inevitably, all of us will be working as part of a team, which is why it's valuable to become an efficient team player. But not everyone makes the effort to work with their teammates, which causes friction and discord within a group or a department.

Sometimes, managers and supervisors nip trouble in the bud and are instrumental in leading matters to a harmonious conclusion, but some of them wouldn't touch conflict with a ten-foot pole. This approach hurts a team and makes them ineffective and unproductive. Team building is definitely a necessity for people who work together. Even if everyone already gets along well and yields positive results on the job, it is still a worthwhile activity that helps everyone work together in better ways.

Building a good, strong team can be achieved in various ways. For some, it's a simple matter of going out for a drink or dinner after work, or spending time getting to know one another, thus strengthening relationships and creating trust within the group. For others, proper team building is done when the team itself is forced to together in a difficult situation and will have to rely on one another to provide good solutions to problems and produce solid work results. Some teams also need just a clear definition of visions, goals and objectives, as well as details on their roles and why they are valuable to the company, in order to get them to unite and work well.

More difficult team situations may call for more professional and advanced methods. the company itself can plan and schedule team building exercises or it could also seek the assistance of companies that provide executive coaching and team building services. Such services will entail getting to know the company's culture and goals, in order to allow them to develop a team building program that is most suited to the team's needs and personality. Such programs will also help you to spot the gaps in management as well as the issues each team is encountering that doesn't help function properly.

Whatever option your company decides on, the important thing is that you took the first important step and acknowledging that you may need some extra help and advice on building a stronger team. This will not only lead to greater productivity for a company, but also in an increase in morale and satisfaction for everyone involved.

Why You Don't Need Business Accounting Software

View of Wall Street, Manhattan.Image via Wikipedia

by Cheryl L. True

Not all organizations need business accounting software. Because of the mobility some companies are better suited to utilize paper and pencil or a personal digital assistant (PDA).

On the other hand, some businesses have enough accounting data and that data is located in one place, to benefit from software. Some of these criteria listed below are directed toward certain business types and may not apply. But, if a company has more than any of these limiters, business accounting software would be a good idea.

Business accounting software is not needed if all of these apply:

Total monthly sales are under $2,000 - generally, the amount of recording effort needed to keep track of $2,000 is minimal and can be done with a pencil and paper or an excel spreadsheet. It is a small enough number that any misapplication can be easily detected and corrected. If the sales are any higher, the risk for error and stealing drastically increase.

Less than 30-monthly sales transactions - this is for the type of business that sells large equipment or contracts jobs that take multiple days to complete. When less than one sale per day is made, it definitely should not be an issue to make any calculations or recordings. Even if the project or sale is a long distance from the office, you should be able to remember that sale for days or weeks until it can be tracked.

Inventory less than 100 items - business accounting software can be very useful for tracking how much inventory is on-hand and how much is needed. Software can be programmed so that when a product is sold, it is automatically withdrawn from the inventory statistics. If there is less than 100 items stored at one time, then those could be easily managed manually.

No employees - payroll can be done by hand, but it can be very time consuming and laborious. If something so detailed can be easily figured automatically by business accounting software, then it would make sense to use it. Besides, a large or small business wants to be working on increasing sales or optimizing efficiency instead of busywork. If no workers are employed, then obviously there is no need for software that calculates payroll.

If all of these guidelines are met, then business accounting software is probably not needed. A software package may still be helpful, but within these ranges, it may not be economical. This is not to say that free accounting software cannot be downloaded and used, but it should not be purchased.
