Unpacking in Your New Home

You've just spent weeks packing, cleaning, and moving everything you own into a new home. Now you're here, and you're probably looking around and wondering what you've gotten yourself into.

Don't expect to be fully unpacked and back to your normal routine in just a few days. You have other chores to do besides unpacking, including learning your way around your new town and stocking up on supplies.

Complete unpacking can take six to twelve weeks, depending on the size of your family. You may find that you have to temporarily store some things in a garage, basement or attic, because there just isn't enough room for them. If you've miscalculated and find there isn't as much room for your things as you thought, consider renting space in a self-storage facility.

You'll probably unpack your kitchen and bedroom first. You need a place to rest at the end of your busy day, and you don't want to have to rely on expensive dining out for more than a few meals. Once these rooms are set up, you can move on to your living areas and the rest of your home.

Be prepared for the unexpected. Even though you made arrangements to have your utilities turned on, services such as cable TV and Internet connections can require you to be at home before they can be installed.

It can take a month or two before you're fully moved in and your life gets back to normal. It's better to take your time and do things right than to rush through them.<br />

Studies have shown that moving is one of the more stressful experiences that most people will go through. Make it as easy on yourself as you can by planning carefully and staying organized as you go.
