by Tony C. Jones SnrRonnie O'Sullivan has won three World Championships as an English snooker player. They were the 2001, 2004, and 2008 World Championships. He has earned more than 6,000,000 over the years and has 21 ranking titles.
Ronnie is a very talented player of the game with a nickname of the Rocket. However, over the years his playing performance seems unbalanced and not consistent which may stem from an unpredictable personality. He also seems to involve himself in various controversial incidents.
He started playing snooker at a young age and accomplished a century break at 10 his score was 147. At 16, he turned professional and won his first 38 matches. His record still stands to this day. In the 1993 World Championship, he was the youngest qualifying player ever. He ended his first season ranking at 57, when he lost. However, he is still the youngest winner of a ranking tournament at 17 years old for his 1993 UK championship. In 1995, he received his first Masters title.
Controversial Behaviors At the 1996 World Championships, the governing body found him guilty of many offenses, then fined him a whopping 20,000, and then suggested that he donate 10,000 pounds to his favorite charity.
Cue Tip Complications O'Sullivan generally goes through dozens of cue tips while performing. In 2006, a TV camera actually caught him intentionally removing his cue tip, although he denied the allegation, he continued playing after receiving the benefit of a doubt. It took a 15-minute break to replace the cue tip.
Illustrious Career Spotlight In April 1997, in the first round of the World Championship he had the fastest recorded maximum break of 5 minutes and 20 seconds, later in November he won his second UK title.
Difficulties In 1998, he won the Benson & Hedges Irish Masters. However, he lost that title for having THC in his system. Ken Doherty, his opponent, rejected the trophy when presented to him as he felt he did not deserve it. However, he did accept the prize money of 90,000.
He lost the Embassy World Championship in 1999 to Stephen Hendry. In the 1999-2000 seasons, he won three ranking titles. However, eventually he lost the 2000 World title to David Gray. Nevertheless, in the 2001 World Championship, he came back in top form and took the title.
In 2002 before their World Championship semi final, he and his opponent Stephen Hendry had some personal problems. He accused Hendry of practicing bad sportsmanship. He apologized later for his remarks. In that match of 17-13, Hendry beat O'Sullivan.
O'Sullivan to hit his strides and won the Irish Masters, the European Open and the Scottish Masters in the 2002 and 2003 seasons. Despite this, Marco Fu beat him in the first round of the World Championships for the third time. The O'Sullivan ranking slid down to number three.
O'Sullivan's father attempting to help called the six-time World Champion Ray Peardon and then requested him to give his advice to his son. Using this new advice O'Sullivan rebounded in top form and then won the 2004 World Championships. Nevertheless, in the quarterfinal of 2005, he lost to Peter Ebdon. At this time, O'Sullivan announced he was not competing the following season and may retire completely. However, with 4-century breaks and a score of 6-0 he defended his Premier League Snooker title and beat Hendry. That season he also won the Masters and Welsh Open titles.
The year 2005 saw him lose the Grand Prix and struggle while competing in the UK Championship, against Mark King, that same year.
A Major Incident of Forfeit He lost the UK Championship to Hendry, in 2006 in the sixth frame, saying he had had enough of it. The caused a disturbance in the audience and one fellow shouted, Get a grip Ronnie. Later the match was officially announced a forfeit. In order to compensate for attending a forfeit, the audience members of the match to see O'Sullivan and Hendry got free tickets from the World Snooker Association. O'Sullivan apologized. In 2007, the World Snooker Association fined him in a sum of 20,000, while docking him of 900 ranking points.
In 2007 at the Saga Insurance Masters, the audience gave a mixed response of boos and applauds upon the returning O'Sullivan. He won the first round but did not attend the press conference following the game. This began yet another controversy. However, he did offer a short interview afterwards. Because of some extraordinary circumstances, he was later excused from participating with the media. Other players showed their disapproval of that decision. O'Sullivan won that tournament while competing with Ding Junhui. A touching display of sportsmanship while comforting his opponent gave his popularity rise once more. However, at best, his performance the rest of the season seemed somewhat mixed.
The Most Popular Sport Player Regardless of his behavior, O'Sullivan is the most popular sport player on the circuit. He has his own brand of showmanship. All the games he attends are packed. He is most likely the biggest draw to the games. The sport gets more attention because of O'Sullivan. He is often compared to such greats as Jimmy White and Alex Higgins.
Only his close opponent Stephen Hendry has beaten his record of having a compilation of better than 500 competitive centuries.
